Identifying:
sides uniform silvery, skin smooth, dorsal fin extremely long, not divided into 2 parts and lacking finlets; 1 long lateral line; pelvic fins minute or absent; caudal fin comparatively small; body extremely long, and very compressed; head small with long fang-like teeth in upper jaw.

Ribbon fish are found in temperate waters from New South Wales to Western Australia at depths of 300-600 metres on the continental slope.  They are also found throughout the north-west Atlantic, Mediterranean, southern Indian and Pacific oceans.

Ribbonfish off New South Wales spawn in winter at depths of 300-500 metres.  They attain a maximum length in excess of  2 metres and weight of 3-4 kg.

Microwave Cooking Times for Fish
- Fish fillets – 5 minutes per 500g on medium-high, +50 seconds more for thicker fillets, or until flesh flakes
- Whole fish - Large – 6 minutes/750g on medium
- Whole fish – Small – 3-4 minutes on medium

Commercial Fishing for Ribbonfish:

SIZE: whole 1.5-3 kg

IDENTIFYING FEATURES: A very long and extremely condensed body with uniform sides and silvery smooth skin. The dorsal fin is extremely long, not divided into two parts and lacking finlets. The caudal fin is comparatively small.

COMPARISONS: Distinctive with its greatly elongated body, small head and fang-like teeth in the upper jaw.

FILLETS: Very long and slender, barely tapering. The flesh is white and of delicate texture, excellent eating.

HABITAT: Semi-pelagic near the bottom of the continental slope mainly in 300-600 meter depth.

CATCHING METHOD: Longliners.
